How to Prioritize Self-care

Being a stay-at-home mom can feel like a never-ending cycle of responsibilities. From managing your kids’ schedules to keeping the house in order, it’s easy to forget forget yourself in the process. But prioritizing self-care is essential for your happiness and well-being. Here’s how to do it!

Acknowledge Your Own Needs

The first step to prioritize self-care as a stay-at-home mom is to recognize that you need time for yourself. It’s okay to feel tired or overwhelmed. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee in peace or indulging in a favorite hobby, acknowledging and prioritizing your needs is the foundation of self-care.

Schedule “Me Time” to Prioritize Self-Care

To truly prioritize self-care as a stay-at-home mom, it is essential to make time for it. I can relate firsthand, as I am still a housewife today. But I remember when I first became a stay-at-home mom after moving to the U.S as an immigrant, my husband used to travel frequently for work, leaving me alone with two young children. I was overwhelmed and often felt lost, juggling the demands of motherhood. I didn’t know anything about the concept of “Me Time” back then. Later, I learned that treating self-care like an important appointment is crucial.

Block out specific times in your calendar just for you. Whether it’s a quick walk, a workout session, or even a few minutes to read, make sure you stick to this time. Remember, your well-being is just as important as anyone else’s!

Set Boundaries to Prioritize Self-Care

Setting boundaries is crucial when trying to prioritize self-care as a stay-at-home. I used to take on so much responsibility by doing laundry for everyone separately and then ironing everything. One day, a friend called me while I was ironing a batch of clothes, and she was shocked. She said, “What? Who does that? Buy yourself a steamer for the most important clothes, and for the rest, just fold them while they’re hot and freshly out of the dryer.” That was the best advice I have ever received! Learning to protect your time allows you to focus on yourself without feeling guilty. Boundaries help create a healthy balance between your family commitments and your personal needs, making it easier to prioritize self-care.

Find Your Support System

Having a support system can make a big difference in how you prioritize self-care as a stay-at-home mom. I didn’t have that myself when I was taking care of my two little kids, because information wasn’t as easy to find back then. Now, almost everyone can access the internet, and it’s very normal to seek online support. Try to connect with other moms who understand your challenges. Share tips, swap babysitting, or simply vent about your day. Knowing you’re not alone can relieve some pressure and encourage you to take time for yourself.

Celebrate Your Progress

As you learn how to prioritize self-care as a stay-at-home mom, remember to celebrate your efforts. This is a sentence that you will encounter a lot throughout my blog because I really believe that every small step counts. Personally, I celebrate every moment by enjoying a cup of hot cocoa or tea from my favorite motivational mug (I’m not a coffee drinker). I invite you to find your own little ways to celebrate, whether it’s savoring a drink from a mug that inspires you daily, taking a deep breath, or simply acknowledging your progress. Celebrating these moments reinforces the importance of self-care and motivates you to keep going.

Beyond The Stay-at-Home Experience

While this blog focuses on my experiences and the challenges of stay-at-home moms, it’s important to acknowledge that the principles of self-care and well-being apply to all women, regardless of their circumstances. My personal journey as a stay-at-home mom has shaped my perspective, but the tips and insights shared here are designed to resonate with anyone juggling the demands of family and life. I believe that every woman deserves to prioritize her well-being, and I hope that the strategies I’ve learned can inspire and support all women in their self-care journeys.
