Understanding the SAHM Role

Being a stay-at-home mom is a full-time job in itself. It involves managing household responsibilities, caring for children, and often juggling various tasks. While this role is rewarding, it can also lead to feelings of isolation or a sense of losing personal identity. Many stay-at-home moms find themselves asking, “Who am I outside of being a mom?” Does this sound familiar? Recognizing and addressing these feelings is the first step towards empowerment.

I’ve been a stay-at-home mom, and I know how hard it can be. I often felt lost, overwhelmed, and would break down in tears. I would tell my husband, “I feel like my life has no sense. Something is missing, and I don’t know what it is.” He’d ask, “What would make you happy?” But I just didn’t know. Every time he asked me that question, my answer was always the same, “I don’t know!” I really didn’t know!

My Twists and Turns

The uncertainty was suffocating me. I had lost touch with my passions, interests, and dreams. I was living solely for others, forgetting that my own happiness mattered too. If you’re nodding in recognition right now, just know you’re not alone.

I was determined to find meaning, so I tried various things:

  • I took online classes, exploring new skills.
  • I created handmade jewelry and opened my first online boutique.
  • I knitted, but soon discovered I was allergic to acrylic yarn.

Jewelry-making and knitting were my happy escapes, but the long hours of sitting that those hobbies require were harming my health. Although I had to adjust, my entrepreneurial spirit remained intact. My handmade jewelry boutique has been converted into Danoue’s Boutique, where I sell beautiful curated pieces and accessories. (check it out here). While these ventures didn’t become my long-term passions, they taught me valuable lessons about self-discovery and perseverance.

The Importance of Self-Discovery

Empowerment begins with self-discovery. This means taking the time to explore who you are, what you love, and what makes you unique. Here are some tips to aid in your journey of self-discovery:

1. Reflect on Your Interests: Take a moment to think about what you enjoyed before becoming a mom. Whether it’s painting, writing, or gardening, rediscovering these interests can reignite your passion.

2. Set Personal Goals: Identify what you want for yourself. This could be learning a new skill, starting a side business, or simply carving out time for self-care. Setting goals can give you direction and motivation.

3. Keep a Journal: Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and dreams can be a powerful tool for self-discovery. It allows you to reflect and clarify what truly matters to you.

4. Ask for Support: Don’t navigate your journey alone. Share your struggles and triumphs with:

  • Friends and family
  • Online forums and communities
  • Support groups (in-person or virtual)
  • Anonymous online platforms

Having a strong support network provides valuable perspective, encouragement, and motivation.

Embracing Your Strengths

Once you’ve started your self-discovery journey, it’s time to embrace your strengths. Every individual has unique talents and qualities that can contribute to their empowerment. Here’s how to identify and embrace your strengths:

1. Take a Skills Inventory: Make a list of your skills, both personal and professional. Are you a great organizer? Do you have excellent communication skills? Recognizing your strengths can boost your confidence.

2. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. Celebrating these wins reinforces your abilities and motivates you to keep moving forward.

3. Share Your Talents: Consider how your skills can benefit others. Whether it’s volunteering in your community or sharing your knowledge online, using your strengths can foster a sense of purpose and empowerment.

When jewelry making and knitting didn’t work out, I felt discouraged, but I refused to give up on finding happiness. In 2017, I started a self-discovery journey, immersing myself in motivational books and transforming my mindset. As I uncovered new passions, my purpose became clear: to help others overcome their own obstacles and thrive.

Today, I’m a Confidence and Mindset Coach, dedicated to empowering women to reach their full potential. My own journey has taught me the power of self-transformation, and I’m passionate about guiding others through their own.

 Overcoming Challenges on the Journey

Transitioning from a stay-at-home mom to a more empowered version of yourself may come with challenges. Here are some common obstacles and how to overcome them:

1. Time Management: Finding time for yourself can be difficult when juggling family responsibilities. One solution is to create a schedule that includes “me time.” This could be as simple as waking up an hour early or designating specific times for your interests.

2. Self-Doubt: It’s normal to feel unsure of yourself, especially when stepping out of your comfort zone. Combat self-doubt by reminding yourself of your accomplishments and seeking feedback from loved ones.

3. Fear of Judgment: You may worry about what others think when pursuing your passions. Remember, it’s your life and your journey. Focus on what makes you happy and fulfilled rather than seeking approval from others.

4. Balancing Roles: Balancing your responsibilities as a mom with your personal goals can be challenging. Communicate with your family about your aspirations and involve them in your journey. This creates a supportive environment for everyone.

Taking Action Towards Empowerment

Now that you’ve explored self-discovery, embraced your strengths, and identified challenges, it’s time to take action! Here are some steps you can start taking today:

1. Start a New Hobby: Choose an activity you’ve always wanted to try. Whether it’s painting, learning a language, beginning a new hobby can be invigorating and fulfilling.

2. Network with Others: Join groups or communities of like-minded women. Connecting with others who share similar interests can provide support, inspiration, and friendship. I always talk about networking because it’s very important.

3. Invest in Learning: Consider enrolling in a class or workshop to learn a new skill. Education can empower you to pursue new opportunities and expand your horizons.

4. Create a Vision Board: Visualize your goals and dreams by creating a vision board. Gather images and words that inspire you and display them prominently as a reminder of your aspirations.

5. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize your well-being by incorporating self-care into your routine. Whether it’s reading a book, practicing yoga, or simply taking a walk, self-care is essential for empowerment.

Bringing It All Together

The journey from being a stay-at-home mom to embracing empowerment is one of self-discovery, growth, and courage. As I navigated this journey, I realized that reclaiming my identity wasn’t selfish; it was essential. I began to explore my interests, rekindle old passions, and discover new ones. By taking the time to understand yourself, embrace your strengths, and overcome challenges, you can transform your life in meaningful ways. Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your passions and redefine your identity.
