I realized that when it comes to seeking help for personal or professional issues, many people are unsure of the differences between coaching, therapy, and counseling. Understanding the distinctions between these three forms of support is crucial in finding the right fit for your needs. In this blog, we’ll explore the unique aspects of each to help you understand the differences. Whether you’re looking for coaching, therapy, or counseling, it’s essential to recognize that each serves a distinct purpose, and can be beneficial in different ways. Let’s dive in!

What is Coaching?
Coaching is a collaborative process that focuses on helping individuals achieve specific goals or improve performance in a particular area of their life. A coach helps clients identify their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for growth, providing guidance and support to help them overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
For instance, as a Confidence and Mindset Coach, I focus on empowering women to take control of their lives, make informed decisions, and assert themselves in a way that aligns with their values and goals. I help them identify and challenge limiting beliefs, build self-awareness, and develop the confidence and resilience needed to overcome obstacles and achieve their aspirations.
In all my coaching roles, my focus is on the client’s future, helping them create a clear vision of what they want to achieve and developing a plan to get there. I provide guidance, support, and accountability, helping them stay focused and motivated as they work towards their goals.
As a coach, I create a sacred space for my clients to explore, discover, and grow . A space where judgment is absent, empathy is abundant, and the only expectation is authenticity. In this space, clients are free to be themselves. Together we uncover the wisdom, strength, and resilience that lies within. Understanding Therapy
Therapy, based on my understanding is a more in-depth process that aims to address underlying issues, such as mental health concerns, emotional struggles, or past traumas. A therapist works with clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, helping them develop coping strategies and work through challenging experiences. Therapy can be beneficial for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, or relationship issues, as it provides a safe and supportive environment to process emotions and develop greater self-awareness. Unlike coaching, which tends to focus on specific goals or outcomes, therapy often involves a more exploratory approach, helping clients gain insight into their motivations, values, and overall well-being.
“Coaching is not about fixing what’s broken, but about revealing what’s already whole. It’s a journey of discovery, empowerment, and growth, where the client is the expert in their own life, and the coach is the catalyst for unlocking their full potential.”
What is Counseling?
Counseling is a broad term that encompasses both coaching and therapy, as well as other forms of support. A counselor may work with clients on a wide range of issues, from academic or career concerns to mental health or relationship problems. Counseling often involves a more holistic approach, considering the individual’s overall context and circumstances. For example, a school counselor might help students navigate academic challenges, while a mental health counselor might provide support for individuals struggling with addiction or trauma. In counseling, the goal is to provide guidance, support, and resources to help clients navigate difficult situations and make informed decisions about their lives.
In today’s digital age, parents want to stay close to their kids while also keeping them safe online. Unfortunately, many tech tools aren’t designed with children’s needs in mind. That’s why Gabb creates kid-friendly technology that helps families stay connected while maintaining a safe and protected environment. Protect your kids with phones & watches designed just for them.
Final Note: Choosing the Right Support
To sum it up, the main differences between coaching, therapy, and counseling lie in their focus and approach. Counseling generally focuses on addressing mental health concerns and emotional issues by exploring past experiences. Coaching is more future-oriented, helping individuals achieve specific goals by focusing on current strengths and strategies. Therapy is a broader term often used interchangeably with counseling, primarily aimed at diagnosing and treating mental health disorders through deeper exploration of thoughts and behaviors.
***Side Note: Please note that the distinctions between coaching, therapy, and counseling are based on my understanding as a coach. These fields are not my area of expertise. For a more comprehensive understanding, I encourage you to research further to determine which type of support best suits your needs. Each approach has its unique benefits and can support your journey toward growth and healing.
With love, Danoue

Hey Nakina,
Thank you so much for your feedback. I hear you! But you know, sometimes the past needs to be healed so we can move forward. There is nothing better than letting go of whatever is holding us back. Sending positive vibes to your friend.
Hi Danoue,
Thank you so much for distinguishing between these three techniques!
Knowing the differences are very helpful. I have a friend in a difficult situation who has been frustrated many times over by counseling. Reading your post, she’d do better with a coach-focus as she is not interested in dealing with the topics counselors bring up regarding the past. It’s so helpful to know these are not interchangeable terms!

Hi Pantea,
Thank you so much for reading, and your feedback is well appreciated!
I’m a LCSW and love how you differentiated the difference between therapy vs coaching. I find that both are helpful and that sometimes people don’t need intensive therapy if they are high-functioning individuals. Great post!
